The best beaches for families in the Maremma

“La Maremma”, the region in the extreme south of Tuscany, with a coastline of more than 130 km from San Vincenzo to Capalbio, spoils its guests with many beaches, each with its own character.

I want to show you the best beaches for families today.

TORRE MOZZA

Children’s paradise with international guests

The beach section “Torre Mozza” is located just outside of Follonica.

It’s just 50 m from the parking lot to the beach and the day at the sea can begin, so the family-friendly Torre Mozza is the right choice, especially if you have all your favorite toys with you, from rubber duck, snorkeling gear to rubber boat, and daddy has to push the overloaded handcart to the sea.  Many international families bustle here, so that the children can quickly get to know new people. Guests like this beach because there are short distances and the water is super clear.

ALBERESE

Close to nature

For me, the Maremma National Park symbolizes the quintessence of Maremma.

Natural, somewhat rough and ruged, original, pure, wide. You can really breathe here, there is space here. In addition to the various nature trails that can be explored with the whole family, Alberese also includes a long beach. Access is limited, so it is advisable to arrive early in order to get one of the coveted places. Passing the wide meadows, the horses and the typical Maremma cattle, suddenly the wonderful view of the sea opens up with a view of Argentario and the island of Giglio.

My advice

All horse lovers should definitely take a ride to the sea with the Maremma horses. An incomparable experience where you can feel intensely the closeness to nature.

LA FENIGLIA & LA GIANNELLA

Bathing in the nature reserve

There are basically only two sandy beaches on the Argentario peninsula, “La Feniglia” and “La Gianella”, all the others are rocky and generally more difficult to access.

La Feniglia, just before Porto Ercole, borders on a nature reserve and is characterized by the shallow beach that families like here. So ideal for small children and carefree parents. Here you can walk far into the water without having to swim.

La Gianella, on the other hand, which connects the mainland with the peninsula, is characterized by the finest sandy beach, many lido and excellent restaurants. My favorite is the “Il Tramonto“. In addition to the freshly caught fish, there is also a children’s playground, so the little ones can let off steam and the parents can relax in peace.

My advice

If you want to spend the day at Feniglia, it is advisable to reserve a parking space in good time, as space is limited and demand is high in high season.

LE ROCHETTE

Golden sandy beach

Le Rocchette, named after the castle of the same name, which still sits on its ledge today, is located south of Punta Ala and very close to Castiglione della Pescaia. At the very end of the beach, to the north there are many rocks, an Eldorado for snorkelers and divers. The fine sandy beach has a yellowish color and is therefore often referred to as the gold of Castiglione. Here free beach sections alternate with beach clubs, where you can rent loungers. So there is always a restaurant or bar within easy reach.

Many guests report that they saw the most beautiful sunsets here.

My advice

I experienced the best aperitif, the best music and the best position for photographing the sunset at the “Skipper Beach Club” in Castiglione della Pescaia. There is also a restaurant with a 180 degree view of the sea, simply fantastic.

PUNTA ALA

Attention all water sports fans

There is only one way in and out to Punta Ala. The headland is about a 10-minute drive north of Castiglione della Pescaia and is characterized by the extensive pine forests that provide soothing shade in summer. The most important sandy beach is on the north side and runs gently into the water. Ideal for families with young children. Punta Ala is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts, whether sailing, windsurfing or stand up paddling. You are exactly right here

BIODOLA (Elba)

In the valley of the sun

On Elba, each beach is more beautiful than the other. The Biodola is located near Portoferraio and can therefore be reached quickly. The special location of the bay, framed by hills and mountains, makes it particularly sheltered from the wind and gives it the feel of a protected nest.

The water is crystal clear and the sand is golden yellow. A quiet place – ideal for the whole family. A special feature are the waves that arrive here when the ferries arrive in Porteferraio. Therefore position your towels far away enough from the water, otherwise they will take to the sea with the next wave.

My advice

For fresh fish at lunchtime, be sure to book at “I due Pini“. Magnificent view of the sea and great value for money.

ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM

If the sun takes a day off, it is advisable to explore the interior and relax in the Terme. The Terme di Saturnia has the highest flow of thermal water in Italy at 500 liters per second. The therapeutic effect is the best here.

In the evening, the best way to end the day is in the restaurant “I due Cippi”. The best restaurant far and wide when it comes to grilled meat. Even the entrance is like a staged play. From the showcase with meat from all over the world, the open fireplace, in which the steak of your choice is prepared, to your own table for this evening, everything has been thought of. The ambience is as simple as the menu.
